@The5thElephant: Physically possible, no, because they wouldn’t be able to produce the waves or move the air possible to create super HQ actual sound… however, there are plenty of ways to fool the human ear into believing it is HQ sound, which I’d assume would be entirely possible.

I said…shopvacs! presto- youtube.

Used to cancel sound with lasers in buildings sounds hazardous. Constantly on creating heat and using electricity even the low powered ones. I would imagine you would need multiple light wavelengths to cancel out different wavelengths of sound too. Even constantly running AC power might not be that safe. At least at first until a few houses burn down and a few people die and a cry for new regulations and then the government stepping in.

The world of 2050 is going to be made of carbon nanotubes at this rate. Carbon nanotube(aka fiber) space frame with embedded carbon nanotube battery covered in carbon nanotube sound isolator/speakers.

@draven301: everything gives you cancer now a days, I don’t even listen to them anymore. What’s safe now, in a year or two will be proven to be cancerous, it’s stupid. If we are going to get cancer from our pans or our plastic bottles, we are probably already going to get cancer.

Hmmm. Thinking if I line my corworkers cube walls, attach the input to his PC, change the boot sound &crank the volume …
*sneaks off to find carbon nanotubes – or maybe some burnt toast*

You know it’s a legitimate scientific experiment or prototype when they openly acknowledge they use binder clips to hold stuff together.
No, seriously – it’s a good indicator!

As long as it can create bass I’m in.

So now states can save money on sound walls and the developers can build right up to the shoulder!!!

@aec007: Until then, we will have to live with our shopvacs.

As a musician and quasi-audiophile, I am extremely amused by the fact that this high-tech scientific marvel, which probably has an unimaginable thousands of dollars in its development, is being held up by $.15 alligator clips from the office.

You had me at Laser.

GOD i hope carbon nanotubes don’t give you cancer.

“They’ll fit in walls and windows, and can noise-cancel ambient rackets.“
In the future, wavelength induced focal eraser (w.i.f.e.) ear plugs will be hot sellers for the male population.

A sheet of tin foil, six electrical connectors, and four binder clips is the future of speaker technology. Did Woz whip this sucker up in his garage?
Very exciting. I look forward to hearing how it sounds. Or, doesn’t sound, as the case may be.
Monty
Seriously, is there anything nanotubes can’t or won’t do?
*swoon*
Lysdexia_NoKotakuEdition
Can something this thin provide as high quality sound as a speaker with a full case? Even presuming the tech advances a lot, is it physically possible to create the same sound?

For so many years I told my friends and others that we would have wall-to-wall screens and speakers in our lifetimes, sooner than we expected.
They all told me I was a day-dreaming lunatic.

@Bullnettles: Kind of… but almost anything can be made into a speaker. It doesn’t mean it will sound good though.
Jesse Scroggins
Anyone else read this and go “Holy shit, the 21st Century has finally arrived!” I know there are other cool breakthroughs this past decade, but this is just ridiculous to me.

Have they decided if carbon nanotubes are carcinogens yet?
