Comcast’s Latest iPhone App Manages Your DVR From Anywhere [Comcast]
Comcast is fairly evil, to be sure. But if they’re doing one thing right, it’s the latest version of their free iPhone app, Comcast Mobile App 2.0.
In this walkthrough, you’ll see that not only can you set recordings from your iPhone, but you can do so over the multiple DVRs that you may have in your house. (Note: so far, this function is only available in select areas.) Meanwhile, everyone receives new push notifications reminding you to watch or record your favorite shows…which admittedly sounds a bit useless in the DVR era.
If you’re watching the clip, skip about 20 seconds in to get to the meat of it. (Not that Scott the Comcast guy doesn’t seem very nice.) [iTunes via Comcast Blog]

@musiqrulez: nice!!!

Got this last week.
Pro: Love that I can remote schedule my DVR.
Con: One of the least intuitive or user friendly apps I’ve ever encountered.

The Uverse app has done all this for sometime (not sure about the push notifications, but those are kinda useless if you already have a DVR isnt it?). I dread the day that I have to move and end up with Comcast because Uverse isn’t available in the area.

@musiqrulez: I care. Sounds intriguing.

It apparently isn’t available in my area yet. That’s okay, I welcome the feature.

If they aren’t charging a monthly fee, I am really surprised.
BTW, if you have comcast, and one of their latest HD capable STB, with firewire out, and a mac, you can kind of roll your own DVR, using a command line tool, and some simple scripting.
I basically built a remote dvr recorder, using google calendar, with activesync to my iphone, and just use the built-in ical, calendar app, and some php scripting, and a command line tool, that I had to modify (the original writer of the code, made the source code available).
If I know I want to watch something, and I might miss it by an hour, or something I will set it to record, and when I get home it’s ready to watch in boxee. I don’t think I need to explain why this is useful, but if you think the comcast DVR is junk, and want access to the mpeg2 stream right to your HD, my solution is better.
I don’t want to promote my “mind dump” (blog), but I did a write-up on how I did it on there. If anyone cares, I will respond with a link.

Apart from the price of my service, and their unwillingness to make Japan TV available to me because I “don’t live in the right part of town”, I don’t see Comcast as evil … wait, what did I say?
ninjagin
the availability is really limited right now.

Also this only works with Motorola DVRs and later on some Cysco that are starting to roll out.
I have the Scientific Atlanta one and it does not work on it. I asked!

This alone is reason for an iPhone, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been out and suddenly remembered that I forgot to record the new House MD or The Inbetweeners
